What is a Conservation District?

Michigan Conservation Districts are special purpose local units of government that utilize state, federal and private sector resources to solve today's conservation problems.  Created to serve as stewards of natural resources, Conservation Districts take an ecosystem approach to conservation and protection.

Programs carried out by Conservation Districts are as diverse as the landscape in Michigan. Programs range from agricultural to water quality and wildlife programs. Conservation Districts continue to expand into diverse areas of natural resource management, rising to meet the environmental challenges of their local communities.

Why do Conservation Districts have tree sales?

Conservation Districts host tree sales to provide landowners with high quality plant material for their conservation activities. This helps ensure that there are conservation species available locally to implement conservation practices on private lands. Conservation Districts offer a wide selection of conservation species for reforestation, wind breaks, wildlife corridors, and even species selected for residential backyard habitat projects.

Plant materials available include bare root conifers, deciduous tree and shrub seedling and transplants.

Michigan Conservation Districts encourage landowners looking for larger plant stock, such as ornamental landscape material and large potted trees and shrubs to visit their local landscape nurseries.
